Sewage lagoons remove most -- but not all -- pharmaceuticals: Many rural communities in the United States use aerated lagoon systems to treat their wastewater. In a new study, researchers determined the effectiveness of rural lagoon systems at removing drugs, chemicals and hormone contaminants from the sewage before the water is discharged back into local waterways.
